SPEAK UP
- DAY 185
- FAITH FILES: MORDECAI
- SCRIPTURE: ESTHER 2
In our text today, Mordecai did something that many people in today’s world tend to ignore because they are too afraid. He refused to look away and ignore a wrong that was about to happen.
Scary to Know
Being privy to an assassination plot is terrifying on it’s own and can get someone in danger; not to mention reporting it. In today’s social climate, when people hear or witness a wrong thing going on and they either mind their business or look the other way. Often when people do either of these things, they are afraid of something. They are afraid that if they speak up, they will be socially ostracised. They may be tagged a snitch or a busybody that is putting their mouth where it shouldn’t be.
OR They are afraid that they might attract negative consequence from the guilty parties and be dragged into something that they want no part of. We can be so used to moving on and minding our business, and it’s that particular behavior that has put our country and people in danger. I understand the power self preservation and quiet frankly, Mordecai had a lot to lose but he chose to do the right thing and speak up. Looking away is the easier option.
Let me tell you a story
Recently, my sister encountered a situation where a police officer was oppressing someone at the behest of an influential woman. Now, my sister had her first degree in law, so she came down and she started to argue with the police and defend that person’s rights, she even had to follow them to the police station just to settle the issue.
But you know what? before she intervened, there was a crowd of people watching, some were just moving by, some even told her to mind her business and that it didn’t concern her, but call it lawyer’s courage but she refused to walk away. She did the right thing as a courageous person is supposed to: standing up against injustice, standing up against wrong, she said No! Not on my watch. That is the character we ought to have as courageous people, not just towards physical injustice, but even toward spiritual injustice.
Speak Up
Beloved, don’t look the other way, SPEAK UP! Don’t be afraid to be a whistleblower, and even if you’re afraid, still speak and let God take care of the rest. The Bible says in Ephesians 5:11 “Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them” If you know that something is happening and you look the other way, even the law will hold you responsible, you could be considered an accomplice. The Bible also says in;
Ezekiel 3:18-19 “If I say to the wicked, “You shall surely die,” and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, in order to save his life, that wicked person shall die for his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand. But if you warn the wicked, and he does not turn from his wickedness, or from his wicked way, he shall die for his iniquity, but you will have delivered your soul”
So today, let’s be people of courage and faith, let’s not be afraid to report issues or to speak up against things that are not right around us. It says in Psalm 94:16 “Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Who will stand for me against those who practice iniquity?”
Be that person today, and God will bless you, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Shalom.
