stillness and rest

REST & STILLNESS – A PROMISE FOR THE FEARFUL

  • DAY 28
  • Fear File: You
  • Scripture: Psalm 23:2-3

A day ago, we started our discussion on this psalm about how Our Shepherd is responsible for us and we read how he delights in providing for our needs even before we realize we need them (Read it here). In our text today we discover that rest, refreshment, and directions are also the provision responsibility of The Shepherd.

Green Pastures

A pasture is a grazing place for herds and flocks. Feeding the flock is the shepherd’s responsibility. Imagine with me for a moment that you met a cow running around looking for what to eat instead of going with the shepherd to the prepared pasture. How funny will that be? I’ve known many a herdsman in my day and they are always responsible for directing the flock through the path that they know they will find food.

Do you now see why Jesus said to take no thought about what to eat?

Still Waters

I love this phrase. I have come up on a herd by a stream. It is a lovely sight of rest and relaxation. The flock gets to sit after walking distances to graze. And while they rest the shepherd counts them and probably reviews their proceeding path. Your shepherd is interested in your rest. The world today promotes a lack of sleep and hustling as the key to success. It often comes off as though getting a good night rest will lead to poverty. And most of us are stuck, working tirelessly to earn a living and barely taking a break because we have to “make it.” For some of us, the greatest miracle God can give us is a good night’s sleep.

God designed everything to take a break, and He exemplified it Himself. He makes times and seasons take breaks; winter gives way to summer and dry season for harmattan. Yet we are too busy to rest. Lack of sleep and rest is the reason behind the majority of diseases we spend money treating. Most of us don’t rest because we are afraid of what we might lose if we do rest. Meanwhile we are loosing our lives one missed sleep at a time.

HE Restores my strength

Sleep gives your body time to reboot, refresh and restore. You wake up full of strength and energy. Same way stillness and resting in the Lord renews you spiritually. Actively spending time with God is non-negotiable. But do you wanna guess why the majority don’t do it? We are busy! Why are you so busy? Because you got a job and why do you need to work? because you want to provide for yourself. See the problem? We need rest to work but we are too busy working to rest. Because we are afraid that if we took a break we will not be able to make ends meet

Beloved, rest, farabale, relax, zu kwanike

He Leads me in the path of righteousness

God is personally invested in your end. So He sets you on the right path. The path that pleases him. If you are in the sheepfold you get to enjoy the divine direction of God. you don’t have to be afraid as things unfold because you know your shepherd will make sure you arrive at the expected end. It works for your good but it is for His namesake. He has sown by himself now he has to watch over his word concerning you to perform it in your lifetime that men may Glorify Him.
