FEAR IS A CURSE

  • DAY 287
  • FEAR FILE:
  • SCRIPTURES: DEUT 28:58,64-67

“If you do not carefully observe all the words of this law that are written in this book, that you may fear this glorious and awesome name, THE LORD YOUR GOD, … you shall find no rest, nor shall the sole of your foot have a resting place; but there the LORD will give you a trembling heart, failing eyes, and anguish of soul. Your life shall hang in doubt before you; you shall fear day and night, and have no assurance of life. In the morning you shall say, ‘Oh, that it were evening!’ And at evening you shall say, ‘Oh, that it were morning!’ because of the fear which terrifies your heart, and because of the sight which your eyes see.

Before Moses passed on and gave his responsibility over to Joshua he had a long conversation with the children of Israel that conversation is what we read in the whole of Deuteronomy, that was his last speech. He takes time to tell these people all that has happened so far, including all the laws of God. In chapter 28, he reminded them of the benefits of staying faithful to God and the consequences of going away from Him. The benefits were blessings and the consequences were curses. That’s where we get our text today.

Fear is a consequence of disobedience and a curse for rebellion. When I read this, it became permanently sealed in my mind that fear is not in God’s plan for me. It also became clear why our world is so troubled by fear. Look at the severity of these statements highlighted in our text.

Troubled by Fear

A Trembling heart there literally means anxiety. Interestingly heart palpitations are a symptom of anxiety. When people are afraid their hearts beat too fast or irregularly. So many people are suffering from panic attacks and phobias and they have their trembling hearts because they haven’t surrendered their lives fully to God. Therefore they lack peace and rest.

Doubt has also plagued many people today. There are doubts about the existence of God, the potency of His power and the natural order of things. This doubt has spread so far that it has affected roles in marriage, sexuality, gender definitions, and so on.

All these fears will plague them day and night. Can you imagine the severity of this in real life? Constantly feeling like you cannot catch a break, sleep will surely elude such a person not to mention peace.

Redeemed not Cursed

All these curses we read in Chapter 28 were attached to the law. But I have good news Christ has redeemed you from the curse of the law (Galatians 3:13). Therefore only those who are not in Christ should be afraid and those who proclaim Christ but don’t live like they are in Him. As for you, you should have peace and rest. Fear is not normal for you, don’t believe it for a second.

Anxiety, doubt, low self-esteem, uncertainty, and all the other manifestations of fear are not meant to be your reality. When you come to Christ, He delivers you from the curse of the law, and where fear exists, it becomes boldness. That’s why the Bible tells us that we have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear. God has delivered us through Jesus. So when you start to see it rear its head, you should address it by the power given to you in the name and blood of Jesus.

Beloved, the world might believe that fear is just an emotion or a natural phenomenon but you know better, it is a spirit, it is a curse. Today, in the name of Jesus, take authority right over every fear, no matter what form it is manifested in your life, and cast it out right now.

Shalom.
