BE IT UNTO ME
- DAY 354
- FAITH FILE: Virgin Mary
- SCRIPTURES: Luke 1:38
“The Holy Spirit will impregnate you” is a very weird answer to “How shall these things be.” How am I going to achieve it? My mind would have thought, how will the intercourse happen? We know this story but it is still as incredible as ever. However, in the face of this incredible thing that Mary heard, what was her response? She said, “Behold the handmaiden of the Lord, be it unto me according to your word.” Let’s take a moment and look at what it means.
A handmaiden is a personal servant, a maid. She serves the lady of the house and is assigned to cater to whatever she might require. When Mary called herself God’s handmaiden, She was saying, “God, I am at your service.” A handmaiden is a person who serves a very useful position. But it’s a subordinate position. So, she indirectly said, God, I surrender. I humble myself under your mighty hand. This sounds incredible but it is not the place of a maid to question her master, if you say the Holy Spirit is going to impregnate me, so be it, do what you want.
Surrender and obedience are friends. To yield to the will of God is not easy. Especially if he’s asking you to do incredible or dangerous things. This young lady was surrendering herself to God, knowing that her life would be in danger and being stoned was the only foreseeable outcome. Knowing that this assignment that God is asking, that this word God brought for her is life-threatening. Yet she said, behold the handmaiden of the Lord.
And God can ask you to do incredible things. Because your brain cannot calculate in the frequency of God only your spirit can. So, it will always be incredible to you. You will find it difficult to obey God if you don’t yield to God.
So, let’s do what Mary did and say, Lord, “I am your handmaiden.” As you say this, think about everything God has said or asked you to do and tell Him you are ready now. “Lord, behold your handmaiden. Be it unto me as you have described. Let it happen in my life as you have said it would happen.”
Shalom.
