DAY 138: ANOINTED
You anoint my head with oil;
PSALM 23:5
Until recently I thought this verse was figurative. Then I read somewhere that the shepherd actually pours a generous amount of oil on the head of their sheep to protect them and heal them. You see the sheep are susceptible to insects that can harm them and they can often get their horns stuck or harm themselves by locking horns, hence the oil.
It was also customary in ancient times for hosts to offer their guests olive oil to put on their heads. It was a courtesy, like offering your guests refreshments when they visit. It was not only refreshing especially after a hot and dusty walk, but also a sign of honor, welcome, and respect. Them. The oil would have been perfumed with fragrant herbs and spices.
The Lord prepared a table for you, so you are His guest. When you come to His table He refreshes you with His spirit – the anointing of the believer. And it is interesting how when the Spirit came down at Pentecost, it fell on their heads. As His flock, His anointing refreshes, beautifies, and protects you from foreign and local threats. And sometimes the oil protects you from you.
If you ever feel weary, do not be afraid; there is oil on your head that can never run dry. Times of refreshing come from the presence of the Lord.
