COME TO YOURSELF

  • DAY 347
  • FEAR FILE: THE PRODIGAL SON
  • SCRIPTURES: Luke 15:11-16

Then He said: “A certain man had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.’ So he divided to them his livelihood. And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living. But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he began to be in want. Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything.

For the first time, our text today is a parable Jesus told of the kingdom and the Father’s love, through the fearful account of this son tagged, prodigal. This son decided that he wanted his inheritance. That sounds strange because inheritance is mainly given when the owner dies, but definitely at the discretion of the owner. However, this guy was in a hurry to get what he wasn’t ready for and wanted it on his terms.

When he receives this inheritance, he heads out as far away from home as possible. But what he was expecting was not what he met. He left his father’s house convinced that he was mature enough to manage his life and that he didn’t need his father. After all, he had all the inheritance now. He was given his father’s resources, but not his father’s wisdom. He has the money, but he does not have the wisdom and experience that made the father get the money. So he ended up squandering it because you cannot sustain the riches of the father without the wisdom of the father.

So there he was, flat broke and a famine rolled around. Since he is far from home, the options for survival in a far country will leave an heir a beggar. Yet, he couldn’t even find favour with anyone to be fed the pigs’ food.

Beloved, God has given you riches and inheritance in Christ Jesus but you cannot sustain it away from Christ. Even the gifts he has bestowed upon you cannot be profitable without the auction and wisdom of the spirit. You will end up in a pig sty. So stay with the Father if you want to continue to use the riches and the gifts and the inheritance of the Father.

Shalom.
