COURAGE TO SING

“Sing, O barren, You who have not borne! Break forth into singing, and cry aloud, You who have not labored with child! For more are the children of the desolate Than the children of the married woman,” says the Lord.

ISAIAH 54:1

Yesterday, we talked about praising God and singing out to God on the assurance and confidence of the word that he has given you because you know that outcome because he has said, he has told you what is going to happen. You take up faith and courage and act like you believe what he says and start to praise him because you know that what he says is true and it will become your reality.

Today, however, we’re talking about praise that comes even when you don’t have a specific word from God on an issue. Praise that is rendered even when you’re not sure of what the outcome will be. A praise that comes from a place of despair and shame. Our text today says, “Sing O Barren.”

The documents before the woman that is called barren states, “You cannot have a child, there is no possibility of you conceiving.” The case has already been concluded and there is no hope. And God says, in the midst of this hopelessness, despair, and fear, what you should do is sing. How do you find a song when you are burdened with issues?

A Contradiction

Barreness is an extreme unfruitfulness. A barren person has nothing to show for their labor and hard work. All they put their hands into comes up empty. They spend time and energy on strategies and hard work but at the end of the day all results are negative the outcome is negative and there is nothing anyone can do to help. But God says sing. Why? Because they have more fruits than them that are fruitful.

There is some kind of contradiction here. We just concluded that this is a hopeless case but God is responding like it is not an issue. It’s like God is not getting the memo. “Daddy, they said this case is hopeless o.” “I know what they said but I AM saying that you already have the thing that they said you can never get, and if you already have it how would you react?”

Beloved, fear is the natural response for a hopeless case so it’s going to take faith and courage for you to sing when you cannot see proof and when you don’t have a word. Your confidence in singing comes from knowing that your God is good and His thoughts for you are good. So sing with me,

For the Lord is good,
for the Lord is good, 
for the Lord is good 
and his mercy endureth forever.
